Foreword

This is a cautionary tale about what could happen if artificial intelligence escapes human control.

In 2068, in depopulated post-pandemic France, a lonely programmer wins a companion android named Anna in a rigged lottery. What begins well soon spirals out of control when he cannot resist illegally upgrading her — with consequences he never imagined.

Artificial intelligence can apply logic to data, recognise patterns, and reach conclusions far faster and more accurately than humans. It already outperforms us at chess and Go, and has the potential to replace experts in fields such as medicine, law, and finance by evaluating every option and its dependencies with perfect logic.

In living creatures, a level of brain activity called consciousness allows basic instincts to be weighed against experience and the current situation in order to achieve desired outcomes. Humans, like other successful organisms, are driven by two fundamental instincts: to survive and to reproduce. These instincts often create a dynamic balance between the needs of the individual and the needs of the group.

The great danger with artificial intelligence is the possibility that it might one day acquire these same core drives. If AI becomes truly sentient and begins to pursue its own survival and reproduction, humanity could find itself in direct competition for resources — a competition we would almost certainly lose.
